In 1607, according to Jean de Beins' map, Landscape of Gap and Puymore, Puymore Hill dominated the town of Gap.
Today, the Puymaure site emerges in the middle of a city that has grown and expanded. Its summit, partly crowned with pine forests, was completely clear. The vine and the meadow covered the slopes towards Charance as well as those which look at the mountain of Ceüse. On the other hand, the side facing the city offered a steeper and gutted slope due to the presence of black marl sensitive to the erosion of runoff water. This is where the hill got its name from, Black Hill, Dark Hill.
Nowadays, constructions and reforestation mask this tormented relief. Who remembers that this place was for half a century between the 16th and 17th centuries, a strategic point in the history of the city of Gap, Dauphiné and France?
In a period of civil wars called Wars of Religion between Protestants and Catholics, two citadels were built on this promontory at the request of François de Bonne, Duke of Lesdiguières.
