Le Complexe du Santon - Christian Philibert (DVD)
Documentary: A history of the clichés and prejudices associated with Provence... and its inhabitants.
Over the centuries, the Provençal has been the subject of numerous stereotypes, or rather ethnotypes, that have been particularly demeaning, and at times have taken on racist overtones.
Without denying that Provençal people themselves are partly responsible for the creation of these ethnotypes, we shall see that French centralism is no stranger to this phenomenon.
Through astonishing film archives (Marcel Pagnol, Jean Giono, Frédéric Mistral...) and with the help of several historians, Christian Philibert (Les 4 saisons d'Espigoule, Travail d'Arabe) retraces the history of these representations and takes us on a voyage of discovery of a relatively little-known part of French history, that of the integration of southern populations into the French nation.
