Contes du Diable et de l'Ogre en Provence - Contes merveilleux de Provence II - Jean-Luc Domenge
(Tales of the Devil and the Ogre in Provence)

Collection "Contes et chansons populaires de la Provence" - Tomes 4

Collection of 37 traditional Provençal tales: religious tales, realistic tales, from the duped devil to the stupid ogres; texts collected by the author, borrowed from other collectors or more literary storytellers. Presents different versions of the same theme and specifies the corresponding Aarne and Thomson international classification of tales.

No need to be a scholar to enjoy these tales and to be drawn into an imaginary world where the devil and the ogre are often victims of the cunning of the Provençal peasants.

«Ah! dit le diable, voilà deux fois que ces bougres de paysans me trompent! Je ne viendrai plus jamais faire des affaires avec eux. J'irai en ville où on ne doit pas être aussi dégourdi!»

("Ah! says the devil, here is twice that these buggers of peasants deceive me! I will never again come to do business with them. I'll go to the city where one doesn't have to be so careless!")

Such are the tales of the devil or the ogre that were told at the wake in rural Provence at the beginning of the 20th century.

These tales of oral tradition were transmitted - in Provençal - from generation to generation since the beginning of time. The testimonies and texts collected by Jean-Luc Domenge show that one can still find traces of this popular culture which, in Provence, had hardly been studied. But you don't need to be a scholar to enjoy these tales and to be drawn into an imaginary world where the devil and the ogre are often victims of the cunning of the Provençal peasants.
