On the gentle and southern slope of the plateau of Bayard are still read the stages of moraines abandoned by the withdrawal of the durancian glacier 15,000 years ago. On the other hand, no trace has ever been found of the oppidum or the agricultural villa which gave the site its Latin name, Rometta.
Partially circumscribed by three torrents, the Luye, the Buzon and the Combe, the bottom of the Romettin territory benefited from the water and the sun which make a site conducive to the sustainable establishment of a population. In the year 1000, the construction of a priory and its church cohabited with the first Rompeans in the shelter of a tower and ramparts pierced by three doors.
