Description

Flore et faune dans la toponymie vauclusienne - Gilles Fossat
(Flora and fauna in Vaucluse toponymy)

The toponymy of the Vaucluse department has given a great variety of names inspired by vegetation and animals, which testify to the close relationship that existed between the environment and its inhabitants. The research presented in this book is organized in two parts, devoted respectively to flora and fauna, each of which is subdivided as follows
 - an alphabetical classification of the names listed in the cadastres of the 19th century and in the current topographic maps of the IGN ;
 - the synthesis of these names, classified according to their typology and their linguistic origin;
 - some "false friends" and family names or sobriquets.

More than three hundred names of plants and animals, wild or domestic, are listed and studied. To understand these names and avoid the pitfalls they may contain, this study is based on the etymology and evolution of these names, starting from their ancient and local forms, by placing them in their linguistic context.
