Pierre Bec was an Occitan linguist and one of the most eminent scholars of literature and the language of oc. In 1968, he published his thesis Les Interférences linguistiques entre gascon et languedocien dans les parlers du Comminges et du Couserans. In 1973, an important book for Occitan philology and dialectology appeared: Manuel pratique d’occitan moderne.
Pierre Bec was the first linguist who carried out a scientific work to standardize Occitan on a rational basis in the early 1970s.
He was a professor at the University of Poitiers, a writer and a poet.
Among his most important works are Manuel pratique de philologie romane e sa Langue occitane  (collection Que sais-je ?).
